AveriSource Drives Results for Leading European Bank Where Others Couldn't

The Challenge
The bank’s critical applications were originally built on the IBM mainframe using Natural and Adabas. Facing the risks of a rapidly retiring workforce and the limitations of their legacy system, the bank knew modernization was essential. However, its path forward was marred by previous failed modernization attempts with other vendors.
Previous efforts using off-the-shelf, 100% automated conversion tools resulted in low quality, unmaintainable code that did not meet the bank's rigorous standards. The customer was left in a challenging position: It needed to transition to a modern .NET and Microsoft SQL Server environment and identify a partner capable of delivering a high-quality, maintainable application – something automated tools alone had failed to achieve.
The Approach
AveriSource was engaged as prime contractor and tasked with proving that a high-quality transformation was possible. The initial project was designed as a strategic proof-of-concept to validate the AveriSource Platform's approach and deliver a production-quality application where others had failed.
A Platform-Based, Quality-First Transformation
The project focused on a critical Natural application consisting of approximately 150,000 lines of code, executing a complete, end-to-end modernization. With an inherent focus on producing well-structured,and easily maintainable code, AveriSource refactored the Natural application into a modern C# .NET solution. In addition, the legacy user interface was transformed to a modern web-based UI while the Adabas database was transformed to a normalized, relational SQL Server solution.
The key to success was AveriSource's hybrid approach, which combines the power of automated tooling with deep architectural expertise to ensure the final product exceeded the quality of a "black box" conversion.
The Results
The modernization project was a resounding success—delivering a transformed application that met the bank’s rigorous quality standards, validated AveriSource’s proven approach, and established a clear, reliable path forward. The outcome gave the bank the confidence to continue modernizing its mission-critical application portfolio with a trusted and capable partner.
